A Letter to Future Me

Writing a response letter to my future self.

It was less than a week ago when I wrote and published my Medium story “A Letter from Future Me,” a creative response to a writing prompt about receiving a message from my future self.

As I originally mentioned in my article, it was a great experience to reflect upon who I am and to appreciate my life’s present journey.

Recently, I came across an almost similar exercise in 301 Writing Ideas: Creative Prompts to Inspire Prose:

Write a letter to your future self about how you currently feel and what you aspire to become.

Wow! O-kay, taking into consideration my prior letter (and re-reading it again), I sat down and came up with the following response to the following prompt:

6 November 2023

Dear Mr. Holmes,

Thank you for that beautiful letter you composed and sent to me last week. I’m truly touched by your sentimental words that were shared from you to me. You don’t know how much I appreciate them.

You probably weren’t expecting a response from me, but I felt, no, I needed to do so. Just reading and absorbing the empowering message of you personally thanking me for being resilient and courageous to pursue my lifetime goal of becoming the best prolific writer I can be. I became inspired knowing that it manifested itself from your written testimony.

Since I initially read your letter, I have been pouring my efforts into spending every free moment improving my craft. For the past six days, I’ve been engaging in activities like doing my Morning Pages sessions from Julia Cameron’s Walking in This World, writing and publishing Medium stories, journaling my thoughts and feelings, completing writing prompts, and reading a minimum of 20 pages daily. Although it wasn’t your intention to encourage me from your last response, my motivation is at an all-time high and I thank you for adding more fuel to my creative fires.

I’m looking forward to the day when we’ll finally meet, my brotha. I don’t know when that day will happen, but I do know that it’s on the horizon. I feel it inside my spirit, which is why I’m pushing myself to consistently progress but at a steady pace.

Take care and be blessed, Mr. Holmes.

Love,

Bill
