When I applied to and wasn’t accepted into any writing retreats this summer, I decided to create my own. Earlier in the year, I received polite rejection emails from a few programs I’d applied to, each one praising my application but offering no invitation:

Rejection Email # 1

Hello all!

I just wanted to let you know that you are currently on the waitlist for ABCD Writers Workshop. Spots do very often come open, so I will keep you posted as we move along. We filled up in record time this year — less than 24 hours. I know, right! But, I’ll keep you posted and I hope that a spot comes open so that you’re able to join us.

Rejection Email # 2

Dear Bill Holmes,

The applications for the 2025 Summer Retreat have been carefully examined by the WXYZ Admissions Committee. We were overwhelmed by the caliber of the applications we received, but owing to financial and physical constraints, we are unable to provide fellowships to all deserving candidates. Although we cannot provide personalized feedback on your manuscript, we nonetheless urge you to reapply.
