Saturday Morning Summer Mindfulness Stroll

This Medium story was written when revisiting one I wrote in 2022 in response to Rachel K.’s “Walking Mindfully.”

It was 7:55 am when I placed my black Swiss Gear backpack on my shoulders and decided to take a 20-minute walk around my new apartment complex. Ordinarily, I’d be weightlifting at my local gym at this hour; however, I exercised Friday morning before going to work.

Today would be the second time I would stroll around my new residence. During my first trip, I saw a few of my neighbors doing the same thing as me. This morning, there was no one as I felt the humidity smack me in my face once I stepped outside my apartment’s greyish-blue front door. Perhaps the heat was a bit unbearable today since the individuals I crossed paths with were mostly elderly. I couldn’t blame them due to the weather and the unbearable stench of garbage emanating from the various dark blue-green, metallic trash containers situated throughout the complex.

My knees were slightly aching from weight training earlier this week, which made me question my ability if I complete 20 minutes today. I wouldn’t allow that to prevent me from finishing my morning trek despite my mind becoming distracted by thoughts of…
