Kicking Off My Day with Morning Pages

Why writing three pages longhand is a part of my writing habits.

If you’ve ever read any of Julia Cameron’s literary works like The Artist’s Way or Walking in This World, then you’re familiar with her concept of writing morning pages. Cameron suggests that her readers who participate in her twelve-week challenge of setting time aside every day to write three pages longhand during the event.

“Writing is simply one of the tools. Pages are meant to be, simply, the act of moving the hand across the page and writing down whatever comes to mind. Nothing is too petty, too silly, too stupid, or too weird to be included.”

I found writing my morning pages to be quite therapeutic whenever I reread The Artist’s Way. It felt great to acknowledge my thoughts and feelings onto paper regardless of my mood. I strived to never miss a day nor create any excuse for skipping a session.

After I finished reading Walking in This World last November 2023, I made the decision to incorporate this routine as part of my writing habits. I’m happy I chose to do so…
